Long Line
A long leash used to provide greater movement while maintaining a physical connection to the handler.
In Review — Pending Editorial ApprovalWhat It Means in Practice
Long lines are fixed-length leashes significantly longer than standard walking leashes. They are used for recall, exposure, and distance work. The handler manages slack manually.
What It Does Not Always Mean
A long line is not the same as a retractable leash. A long line is a fixed length with no mechanical extension. It does not teach recall — it creates conditions for recall practice.
Why Context Matters
Long lines require handling skill. Never wrap around the hand. Choose appropriate length and material for the environment and the dog.
Commonly Confused With
Tracking Line
A tracking line is designed specifically for tracking and scent work. A long line is more versatile for general distance work.
Retractable Leash
A retractable leash extends and retracts mechanically. A long line is a fixed length.
