Breed Terms
Working Line
A breeding line selected primarily for functional traits related to work, sport, or performance.
In Review — Pending Editorial ApprovalWhat It Means in Practice
Working-line dogs are bred for traits like drive, intensity, trainability, or scenting ability rather than appearance. They may be more intense and demanding than show-line counterparts.
What It Does Not Always Mean
Working line does not guarantee suitability, stability, or quality. A working-line dog may be unsuitable for work, and individual variation remains significant.
Why Context Matters
The term is used differently across breeds. A working-line German Shepherd and a working-line Labrador may have very different traits. Research the specific line and breeder.
